Un equipo internacional de científicos ha encontrado altos niveles de plomo en la sangre de poblaciones indígenas de la Amazonía peruana. La concentraciones de este metal tóxico son más elevadas en las comunidades que viven cerca de áreas de extracción de petróleo y en las que se llevan a cabo labores de limpieza después de derrames de crudo.
La investigación, que contó con la participación de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), el Instituto de Salud Global de Barcelona (ISGlobal) y el Instituto Nacional de Salud de Perú, fue publicada este lunes en la revista Environment International
El estudio se realizó entre mayo y junio de 2016 e incluyó a 1.047 personas, de las cuales 309 (31 %) eran niños menores de 12 años. Todos los participantes analizados habitan cuatro cuencas hidrográficas de la Amazonía del Perú, una remota zona no industrializada.
Como parte de la investigación, los científicos condujeron entrevistas presenciales para recoger datos sobre los factores de riesgo y el estilo de vida de los participantes y les tomaron análisis de sangre.
El mayor nivel de metal en sangre se encontró entre aquellos que vivían en la cuenca del río Corrientes, donde se concentra la mayoría de las actividades de extracción de crudo de la zona. También se detectó plomo en la sangre de quienes residían a menos de una hora a pie de una instalación petrolera.
Asimismo, en los lugares con menos contaminación ambiental, «la vía más probable es por exposición ocupacional», es decir, estar en contacto directo con el petróleo al participar en tareas de limpieza después de producirse derrames de crudo, señaló O’Callaghan-Gordo.
La experta advirtió que cualquier cantidad de plomo en la sangre implica consecuencias para la salud, entre ellas, problemas neurológicos y de neurodesarrollo en niños.
